27 Feb FDA Commissioner Admits they Won’t Ban CBD
Products containing cannabidiol (CBD) aren’t going anywhere. The Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Stephen Hahn, said that it would be “a fool’s game” to attempt to prohibit CBD products. Hahn took office last November and this is the first comment he has made publicly about CBD.
“People are using these products,” Hahn said “We’re not going to be able to say you can’t use these products. It’s a fool’s game to try to even approach that.”
CBD products have been legal, with a little gray area, in the US since the Farm Bill passed in 2018. The problem has been regulating it! CBD has been a bit of a wild west market since then. The FDA has not approved any over the counter CBD products for sale, and States have been charged with regulating their own markets for agriculture. The FDA is still in the process of developing rules to allow businesses to sell the hemp derived compound.
Hahn also expressed that the FDA isn’t exactly happy with how CBD has exploded into the US market, but the agency isn’t going to try to stop it!
“We have to be open to the fact that there might be some value in these products, and certainly Americans think that’s the case,” said Hahn. “But we want to get them information to help them make the right decisions.”
