Four Years Later: Tampa’s Mushroom Dispensary Is Still Changing the Conversation

Four years ago today, Tampa got a mushroom dispensary.

On September 19, 2022, Creative Loafing Tampa Bay published a headline that probably made more than a few people stop scrolling:

“Tampa now has a magic mushroom dispensary.”

The story introduced Tampa Bay to what we were doing at Chillum Mushroom & Hemp Dispensary in Ybor City and our claim that Chillum was the first mushroom dispensary of its kind in Florida and the United States.

At the time, the whole concept sounded pretty crazy.

Four years later?

We’re still here. And mushrooms aren’t nearly as weird anymore.

Tampa’s Mushroom Dispensary Turns Four

When we expanded Chillum into a mushroom dispensary in 2022, I spent a ridiculous amount of time answering one question:

“What the hell is a mushroom dispensary?”

Fair question.

Back then, most people associated mushrooms with either the white button mushrooms on their pizza or illegal psychedelic mushrooms containing psilocybin.

But there is an enormous world of fungi between those two things.

That was part of what we wanted people to discover.

Chillum began bringing different parts of mushroom culture together under one roof—from functional mushrooms and mycology to emerging legal mushroom products.

Creative Loafing covered that transition on September 19, 2022, reporting that Chillum had changed its name from Chillum Hemp Dispensary to Chillum Mushroom & Hemp Dispensary as mushrooms became a larger part of the business.

Four years later, the questions people ask us are completely different.

People already know about Lion’s Mane.

They’ve heard about psychedelic research.

They know what microdosing means.

They’re hearing about psilocybin policy changes around the country.

And they’re encountering an entirely new generation of mushroom products that barely existed when we started doing this.

The conversation caught up with us.

What Is a Mushroom Dispensary?

A mushroom dispensary is a retailer specializing in legal mushroom and mushroom-related products.

Unlike a licensed cannabis dispensary, the term “mushroom dispensary” doesn’t mean that the store is selling psilocybin.

Chillum does not sell psilocybin.

Instead, our goal has always been to explore the legal side of mushroom culture while educating people about mycology, functional mushrooms and the rapidly developing mushroom industry.

That’s an important distinction because not everything marketed as a “mushroom product” is the same.

And in 2026, understanding those differences may be more important than ever.

From Functional Mushrooms to Non-Detect Tryptamines

One of the biggest changes we’ve seen over the last four years is the emergence of an entirely new category of mushroom products.

Today, Chillum carries Learn Euphoria’s Non-Detect Tryptamine mushroom products.

These products are made from real Psilocybe cubensis mushroom material with no psilocybin.

Learn Euphoria describes its products as containing naturally occurring non-detect tryptamines derived from real Psilocybe cubensis rather than using synthetic tryptamines or Amanita muscaria as the basis of the products.

That’s a pretty significant change from the mushroom conversation we were having in 2022.

Four years ago, we were explaining what a mushroom dispensary was.

Now we’re explaining non-detect tryptamines.

Welcome to the mushroom industry. Things move fast.

What Are Non-Detect Tryptamines?

Tryptamines are a broad family of naturally occurring chemical compounds found throughout nature.

The term “non-detect tryptamines” is used by Learn Euphoria to describe its mushroom-derived products made from Psilocybe cubensis with no psilocybin.

This is also where consumer education becomes incredibly important.

Just because two packages both have mushrooms printed on them doesn’t mean the products inside are remotely the same.

Some mushroom products are based on functional mushrooms.

Some use Amanita species.

Some products in the broader marketplace may contain synthetic ingredients.

Learn Euphoria’s products are positioned differently: natural, mushroom-derived non-detect tryptamines from real Psilocybe cubensis, with no psilocybin.

That’s why we encourage people to actually read labels, look at laboratory information and ask questions about what they’re buying.

Natural vs. Synthetic Mushroom Products

This may become one of the biggest conversations surrounding the mushroom industry.

Consumers see words like “mushroom,” “magic mushroom” or “mushroom gummy” and understandably assume those products have something in common.

They may not.

A mushroom on the package doesn’t tell you what’s inside.

That’s one reason Chillum has increasingly focused on education and transparency.

If you’re considering any mushroom product, you should know what mushroom it comes from, what ingredients it contains and whether appropriate laboratory testing is available.

Learn Euphoria summarizes that philosophy with a pretty simple motto:

“Legalization through Education.”

And after four years in this business, that idea makes even more sense to us.

The Mushroom World Has Changed Since 2022

The biggest difference between 2022 and 2026 isn’t any single product sitting on our shelves.

It’s the conversation happening outside the store.

Mushrooms and psychedelics have moved much closer to mainstream discussion.

Scientists and universities are studying psychedelic compounds. Policymakers are debating how psychedelic substances should be regulated. Functional mushrooms have become a recognizable wellness category. Mycology has attracted new audiences.

And mushroom-focused businesses have appeared throughout the country.

In fact, the concept that sounded so unusual when Chillum launched is no longer unique to Tampa. Other Tampa businesses are now holding mushroom-focused events involving functional mushrooms, mycology and microdosing education.

For us, that’s actually pretty cool.

We wanted Tampa to talk about mushrooms.

Mission accomplished.

From “What Is a Mushroom Dispensary?” to “What’s Actually in This?”

That might be the best way to explain what’s happened over these four years.

In 2022, the question was:

“What the hell is a mushroom dispensary?”

In 2026, the question is increasingly:

“What’s actually in this mushroom product?”

That’s progress.

But it also means education has to keep up with innovation.

As mushroom products become more common, consumers need to understand the difference between functional mushrooms, Amanita products, synthetic compounds, naturally derived tryptamines and products containing controlled substances such as psilocybin.

They aren’t interchangeable.

And a picture of a mushroom on a package doesn’t answer those questions.

Florida Has Also Changed Its Laws on Psilocybin Mushroom Spores

The legal landscape surrounding mushrooms in Florida has changed significantly since Chillum first made headlines in 2022. At the time, psilocybin and psilocin were controlled substances, but mushroom spores that did not themselves contain psilocybin occupied a different legal position. That changed in 2025, when Florida enacted a new law prohibiting the transport, importation, sale, furnishing or giving away of spores or mycelium capable of producing mushrooms that will contain a controlled substance, including psilocybin or psilocin, during their life cycle. Violating the law is a first-degree misdemeanor. The change provides another example of just how dramatically Florida’s mushroom landscape has evolved during Chillum’s first four years as a mushroom dispensary.

“Four years ago, people could legally purchase psilocybin mushroom spores in Florida even though psilocybin itself was illegal,” said Chillum founder Carlos Hermida. “Today, those spores are illegal to sell or distribute in the state. Whether we’re talking about spores, functional mushrooms or completely new categories like non-detect tryptamines, the rules and the products surrounding mushrooms have changed incredibly fast. That’s why education is such an important part of what we do.”

Four Years Later, We’re Still in Ybor City

Through everything that has changed, one thing hasn’t:

Chillum is still in Ybor City.

You can find us at:

Chillum Mushroom & Hemp Dispensary
1714 E. 7th Ave.
Tampa, FL 33605

And honestly, I can’t think of a better neighborhood for this experiment.

Ybor has always been weird.

It has always been rebellious.

It has always attracted artists, entrepreneurs, outsiders and people willing to try something before everybody else decides it’s normal.

A mushroom dispensary fits right in.

So What Happens During the Next Four Years?

That’s the fun part.

I have absolutely no idea.

If the transformation between 2022 and 2026 taught us anything, it’s that predicting where the mushroom industry will be four years from now is probably a good way to make yourself look stupid.

What we can predict is that people are going to keep asking questions.

They’re going to want to understand mushrooms.

They’re going to want to know what’s natural and what’s synthetic.

They’re going to want to know what’s legal and what’s not.

And they’re going to want to know what’s actually inside the products they’re seeing online and on store shelves.

We’ll keep doing what we started doing four years ago:

Talking about mushrooms. Asking questions. Educating people. And probably getting ourselves into a little bit of trouble along the way.

Four years after Creative Loafing announced that “Tampa now has a magic mushroom dispensary,” Chillum is still here.

The mushroom dispensary survived.

Now let’s see what happens next.
