The Long, Strange Trip of Psychedelics—and Why It Matters Now

Psychedelics have been used by humans for thousands of years—for healing, for insight, for connection. But for most of modern history, their story has been distorted, criminalized, and hidden from view.

Now, that story is changing.

As the first legal mushroom dispensary in the country, Chillum has always believed in educating our community—not just selling products, but helping people understand the power, history, and purpose behind them.

Let’s take a quick journey through the history of psychedelics, and we’ll show you why it’s more important than ever to educate yourself.

Ancient Wisdom, Ancient Medicines

Long before the War on Drugs, before lab coats and clinical trials, psychedelics were sacred.

  • Mesoamerican cultures referred to psilocybin mushrooms as teonanácatl, the “flesh of the gods.”
  • Amazonian tribes brewed ayahuasca to access visions and healing.
  • Siberian shamans consumed Amanita muscaria mushrooms during winter rituals.
  • In ancient Greece, the Eleusinian Mysteries may have included a psychedelic drink that connected initiates to divine realms.

These experiences were ceremonial, spiritual, and deeply meaningful. Psychedelics weren’t a “high”—they were a rite.

The Rise and Fall of Psychedelics in the West

In the 20th century, psychedelics entered the Western spotlight. LSD was synthesized by Albert Hofmann in 1938, and psilocybin mushrooms were introduced to the U.S. by R. Gordon Wasson in the 1950s. Psychiatrists explored psychedelics for treating alcoholism, trauma, and depression.

But with the counterculture came controversy.

By the 1970s, fear of social change led to a political crackdown. Psychedelics were classified as Schedule I substances—considered dangerous, addictive, and medically useless. The science stopped. The stigma began.

The Psychedelic Comeback

In recent years, psychedelics have made a powerful return—this time with data.

Major universities like Johns Hopkins and NYU have published studies showing that psilocybin and other psychedelics may help with:

  • Depression
  • PTSD
  • Addiction
  • End-of-life anxiety

Meanwhile, cities and states across the U.S. are decriminalizing mushrooms and exploring therapeutic use. Public perception is shifting, and many are beginning to see psychedelics for what they are: tools for healing and self-discovery.

So… Why Should You Learn About Psychedelics?

We’re in a new era. Psychedelics are more available, more accepted, and more talked about than ever before. But that doesn’t mean people know what they’re doing.
