Trump Isn’t Going to Legalize Cannabis

Some analysts predicted that, in an effort to slow democrats’ momentum, Donald Trump would support cannabis legalization to boost his chance for reelection.  Like most things, the Trump administration has officially “screwed that up”.

As a matter of fact, the opposite has happened. The Trump administration has proposed removing medical marijuana protections in the 2021 fiscal budget and Trump was caught on audio bad mouthing marijuana patients.

Trump hasn’t done anything to take back his anti marijuana statements.

Since then, a top Trump spokesman, Marc Lotter, has said that cannabis should remain illegal on a federal level.

“I think the president is looking at this from a standpoint of a parent—a parent of a young person—to make sure we keep our kids away from drugs,” Lotter said. “They need to be kept illegal. That is the federal policy.”

Trump stated during his presidential campaign and during his presidency that marijuana legalization should be left up to the state level. However, these recent findings complicate his stance.

“I think the president has been pretty clear on his views on marijuana at the federal level. I know many states have taken a different path,” Lotter said.
