18 Apr Congress Members Ask for Cannabis Industry Inclusion in Coronavirus Relief

Approximately three dozen members of the US House of Representatives have signed a letter, and sent it to congressional leaders, asking that cannabis companies be included in future federal relief packages for the coronavirus outbreak.  This is the result of the cannabis industry being largely kept out of the $2 trillion CARES act.

The letter is by the Congressional Cannabis Caucus, which is led by Democratic US Reps. Earl Blueme Young of Alaska and Tom McClintock of California.

The letter describes the cannabis industry as “a major contributor to the US economy” and explains that the industry employs approximately 240,000 Americans and the industry created almost $2 billion in state and local tax revenues in 2019.  The letter also explains that many states have deemed the industry essential during the pandemic.  Of course, the letter also requests that the US Small Business Administration and other forms of assistance be made available to the industry.
