01 Dec What is CBD Oil?
What is CBD oil? The truth is… not all CBD oil is created equally. The concept of CBD oil can confuse the hell out of almost anyone. Problem with this concept is that CBD itself is a fat. Meaning CBD is actually a type of oil. So, pretty much any way you look at it, all CBD could be considered CBD oil. But I remind you…. Not all CBD oil is created equally…
So... What is CBD Oil?
So, what are people talking about when they say, “CBD oil”? When someone walks into Chillum and asks for “CBD oil”. They normally mean one of 3 things:
- a vape cartridge filled a vapeable CBD oil
- CBD dabs
- Or a CBD sublingual drop that uses a carrier oil.
Nine times out of ten, they are looking for a sublingual drop. Or they are looking for CBD oil that is consumed by placing it under the tongue. A CBD sublingual drop, sometimes called a CBD tincture, is a CBD oil that is ingested by placing the CBD under your tongue. The reason why sublingual drops are sometimes referred to as CBD tinctures is because they used to be mostly all tinctures. The easiest way to make a CBD sublingual drop is by making a CBD tincture. CBD tinctures are made by extracting the CBD from the raw plant material into an alcohol base. They are made by simply soaking raw plant material in alcohol, typically a alcohol that has a strong proof, this extracts the CBD into the alcohol. After the CBD is extracted into the alcohol the raw plant material can be strained and the alcohol takes on a green tint. The tincture is typically consumer under the tongue but can be mixed into drinks and food.
WAIT… I’M CONFUSED… WHAT IS CBD OIL?
Typically, when someone is referring to CBD Oil, they are referring to CBD that is mixed with a carrier oil. The carrier oil can be many different things: Olive Oil, MCT Oil (refined coconut oil), Vegetable Glycerin, Hemp Seed Oil, etc. Many times, when CBD is mixed with a carrier oil, these concoctions are intended to be consumed sublingually.
So, this leads us to our next question…
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A CBD OIL AND A CBD TINCTURE?
Both CBD oils and CBD tinctures are consumed as sublingual drops. This is where much of the confusion lies, both contain CBD oil. The difference is what is mixed with the CBD.
- Tinctures are made with an alcohol based
- Sublingual CBD Oils are made with an oil base
- Typically from vegetable glycerin, MCT oil, hemp seed oil (derived from the seed rather than raw plant material), etc..
- Sublingual CBD oils can be used topically but isn’t ideal
PROS AND CONS OF CBD TINCTURES
The most obvious con for CBD tinctures is the taste. Let us not forget that consuming alcohol with CBD may be contrary to why the person is consuming CBD in the first place.
HOWEVER, THERE ARE A FEW ADVANTAGES TO CBD TINCTURES
- Tinctures have a longer shelf life than oil-based sublinguals.
- Alcohol is water soluble and can be added to drinks easier.
- Oil isn’t as easily absorbed by the body or have a higher bioavailability. Meaning you absorb more of the CBD and it “kicks in” quicker.
PEOPLE JUST LIKE CBD OIL BETTER...
Even though there are a few advantages to using CBD tinctures. The fact is, CBD oil just taste better and, for that reason, is easier for people to consume.
